It’s normal to get the occasional acne spot or a rash over your lifetime, and for most, it doesn't quite warrant a trip to the dermatologist. But sometimes, there’s a little more on the cards to worry about, leaving you wondering when the best time to seek professional advice might be.
Here are the signs you should watch out for, indicating it might be time to head to your local skin doctor.
Severe sunburn
If you’ve been in the sun a lot recently and collected some nasty-looking sunburn, then a trip to the skin doctor is probably a good idea, even if just to eliminate any basic threats. Sunburn is a sign of skin damage, so in this case, you should seek medical advice to ensure you’re across any problems that might arise in the future.
Change in your mole
If you notice a difference in your mole, then seeking a second opinion is always worthwhile. A mole that’s showing signs changing colour or shape, or is starting to scab in the surrounding area, can be a concern. Ensure that there are no open wounds or that the area is bleeding. Additionally, if you’re constantly itching this spot, it’s critical you seek advice.
The Cancer Council notes that "approximately, two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70". With Australia currently ranked number one in the world for skin cancers, then it is worth getting check yearly by your dermatologist, even if there aren’t any obvious signs for concern.
Permanent blushing
We all like to wear a little blush now and again, but if you find yourself with permanently rosy cheeks, and you haven't worn makeup in days, there might be something underlying causing it. The good news is that, although the exact reason for this skin condition is unknown, it can be treated easily, with the help of a skin doctor.
Itch or red scalp
A persistent itchy and red scalp can be both irritating and embarrassing. More than likely this issue will end up being attributed to a condition. Because of this, it’s worth being getting checked by a dermatologist who can assess the area thoroughly.
Severe acne
A pimple here and there is normal, but if you find that your acne turns into a severe case, then it’s time to head to a clinic. A skin doctor can help you to eliminate any potential scarring, and treat the overall problem. If scarring is already an issue, this can also be treated.
Rashes
Rashes can come and go, but if they persist, then treatment should be on the cards. Outbreaks can be a sign of bacterial infection, an allergic reaction or skin conditions – such as psoriasis. In most cases, though, they can be treated under medical supervision.
Other common issues
From excessive sweating, through to hair loss, ageing skin and wounds that won’t heal. Knowing what’s going on with your body means ensuring you’re equipping yourself with medical advice that can explain any underlying issues. Be it unexplained redness, brown spots, warts and change in nail growth – a skin doctor or dermatologist can take a holistic approach towards assessing what’s at hand.
In essence, it’s good practice to go for a yearly skin checkup anyway, as it helps find problems that could lead to something more serious.
